Glascock - Rose

Source: Interview with Rose Glascock, long-time 2nd grade teacher at Waveland School.  – Karen Zach

I was recently visiting my second grade teacher, Mrs. Rose Glascock. She was gracious enough to lend me an old cookbook from her high school days at Waveland HS. She said Carol Marcum was the first Domestic Science teacher at WHS in 1913, teaching “A knowledge of the home.”  In the “Waveland Student” (similar to a now-day yearbook) from the year 1915-1916 there was a brief history telling about how the domestic science classes began. There was no equipment and girls went to work to make money for these articles by giving socials, food sales and finally a cookbook which was printed in 1916 by the high school girls under the guidance of Ozark, Pal (now living in Newtown).  I found two recipes I thought you might enjoy from this beautiful old book (sure wish I’d have copied the whole thing).

Marshmallow Dainty – cut ½ # marshmallows into pieces. Add 1 C whipped cream, 1 ½ T sugar, 2 stiff beaten egg whites, 1 C diced bananas and 1 C. chopped nuts. Serve in pretty glasses.  Rose’s eyes lit-up in memory as she pointed out a recipe of her mother’s Lizzie Bayless.  Orange Ice:  6 large oranges, 1 pt. water, juice of two lemons, 1 pt. sugar.  Take juice of lemons and oranges and grated rind of 3 oranges and add this to sugar which has been dissolved into the water!

In 1919-1920, Rose taught at Old Hickory School in Brown Township under her maiden name, Rose Bayless for grades 1-4.  However, Rose was lucky to be able to teach as a married woman as many in the early times weren’t allowed.

In 1923-24, Rose taught for Liberty School (a small Brown Township school) with 14 in grades 1-8.

She spent many, many years at Waveland teaching grade 2.  I had her in that grade and she was amazing – an excellent teacher but more, a guider, always telling us we had done good things, always encouraging. NEVER remember her raising her voice, not even once. An amazing lady.

NOTE: Rose is the one on the left with the big smile - she had that beautiful grin on her face about 100% of the time.  The one on the other end, Norma Mitchell was a sweetie too!
